H.R. McMaster will tell the story of his 13 months as U.S. national security advisor in a book coming later this year, the Associated Press reports.

Harper will publish the retired U.S. Army lieutenant general’s At War With Ourselves: My Tour of Duty in the Trump White House this summer. The press says the book “highlights the crucial importance of competence in foreign policy, and makes plain the need for leaders who possess the character and intellect to guide the United States in a tumultuous world.”

McMaster was educated at West Point and the University of North Carolina; he served in U.S. Army in the Gulf War, the Afghanistan War, and the Iraq War. In 2017, then-President Donald Trump nominated him as national security advisor; he was confirmed by the Senate not long after.

He served as national security advisor for a little over a year before resigning; he was known to have a rocky relationship with Trump.

McMaster is the author of two previous books: Dereliction of Duty: Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Lies That Led to Vietnam (1997) and Battlegrounds: The Fight to Defend the Free World (2020).

In his new book, Harper says, “McMaster writes candidly about Cabinet officials who, deeply disturbed by Trump’s language and behavior, prioritized controlling the President over collaborating to provide the President with options.”

At War With Ourselves is slated for publication on Aug. 27.
